Is there any difference in men and women's behaviour when it comes to showing affection for the opposite sex? I have a long-term female friend who I become really attracted to. I wouldn't like to put our friendship in danger by showing romantic attraction and yet I'm tempted to ask her out.

Bottom line: You could always say that you would like to be more than just friends, but you're not sure how she feels. If she still only wants to be just friends then tell her you can accept that, and see how things go. She might decide at a later time that she wants to have a bit more.
Work your way in slow. Invite her somewhere. Maybe a friendly lunch to somewhere casual. Get to know her personally. Eventually things will be more comfortable for you to express your true feelings.
